Sultan Alparslan's greatest ambition was to unite Muslim communities under the Seljuk flag. To achieve this, he continued the Anatolian campaigns initiated during the reign of his uncle, Tugrul Beg. Meanwhile, internal turmoil within the Byzantine Empire accelerated the Turks' advance into Asia Minor.
